2026 Construction Market Outlook: Growth Amidst Resource Constraints
The sector is transitioning from the stagnation of previous years into a robust “rebuild” phase, as Growth is the number one mission of the Labour government. We forecast that new work output will rise by 16-18% through 2030. However, this growth is exepcted to be met with a 15% aggregate cost increase by 2030, primarily driven by labour inflation.
Key sectors we are monitoring for growth include:
- Renewable Energy & Infrastructure, with projects like the Cottam 600MW Solar Farm driving demand for specialist engineers.
- Digital Construction and the adoption of Digital Twin technology and BIM (Building Information Modelling) becoming standard practice.
- Commercial Refurbishment, particularly in occupied buildings and heritage sites across London.
The 2026 Construction Salary Guide: Is Pay Still the Priority?
According to research, 86% of construction professionals are satisfied with their current salary. Despite this, 43% are still seeking a pay rise, highlighting that while benchmarking is competitive, the cost of living remains a top concern.
However, our report reveals that money alone is no longer the primary driver for retention. We are seeing a significant “Benefits Gap”:
- Flexible Working: 37% of professionals want flexible hours, yet our analysis shows only 3% of job adverts currently offer them (p. 11).
- Work-Life Balance: 32% of candidates now prioritise work-life integration over a higher salary (p. 11).
At Atkins Search Recruitment, we’ve analysed thousands of job placements, interviewed hundreds of hiring managers and compiled comprehensive market data to bring you the most accurate picture of construction salary 2026 expectations across the UK.

Regional Skills Shortages: Where is the Demand Highest?
We have mapped the UK to identify where the construction skills gap is most acute. Our regional analysis shows specific demand for:
- West Midlands: Sustainability expertise and digital engineering specialists.
- East Midlands: Infrastructure specialists for rail electrification, NEC contracts, public sector delivery.
- Yorkshire: Engineers (civil, structural, site, M&E) for net-zero projects
- South East: Industrial and commercial specialists for M&E systems, fit-out, mission-critical programmes.
- North West: Infrastructure specialists for multi-phase programmes and the energy transition.
- London: Residential specialists focused on building safety and energy efficiency.
To bridge these gaps, we are working closely following the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) guidelines to support Technical Excellence Colleges and Skills Bootcamps.
Recruitment Strategies for Success: Diversifying the Pipeline
Our recruitment strategy has shifted toward long-term sustainability due to the extensive churn rate within the Construction industry. We believe the solution lies in diversifying the talent pipeline:
- Attracting Women to Construction as women make up less than 15% of the workforce; we are actively working to improve this through regional diversity initiatives.
- Degree Apprenticeships, advocating for the expansion of entry routes to provide stable pathways for the next generation.
