Managing Quantity Surveyor


Role

As Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will lead the commercial management of multiple projects, ensuring robust financial control, effective procurement strategies, and successful commercial outcomes.

You will work closely with Directors, Contracts Managers, Project Teams, Clients, and Supply Chain Partners to maximise project profitability while mitigating commercial risk.

This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on commercial management and offers the opportunity to significantly influence the success and growth of both projects and the wider commercial department.

Responsibilities

As a Managing Quantity Surveyor, your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the commercial performance of multiple civil engineering and infrastructure schemes
  • Managing and mentoring a team of Quantity Surveyors to ensure high levels of performance and professional development
  • Taking ownership of Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR) reporting and monthly forecasting processes
  • Developing and implementing commercial strategies to maximise project profitability
  • Managing procurement activities, subcontractor packages, and supply chain relationships
  • Negotiating subcontract agreements and managing contractual obligations
  • Maintaining and monitoring Risk and Opportunity Registers
  • Attending project launch meetings and ensuring robust commercial controls are established from inception
  • Working alongside operational teams to identify value engineering opportunities and buildability improvements
  • Managing client and subcontractor commercial issues and resolving disputes effectively
  • Reviewing contract terms and conditions to identify opportunities and mitigate commercial risk
  • Supporting bid and tender submissions through commercial review and subcontractor engagement
  • Collaborating with Contracts Managers, Project Managers, and Directors to drive project success
  • Monitoring project margins and implementing improvement initiatives
  • Supporting recruitment, training, and development of commercial team members
  • Maintaining strong client, consultant, and stakeholder relationships

Person

To be successful in this Managing Quantity Surveyor role, you will bring strong leadership capability, commercial expertise, and a proven track record of delivering successful financial outcomes within the construction or civil engineering sector.

  • Extensive experience as a Managing Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor, or Commercial Manager
  • Strong background within Civil Engineering, Highways, Infrastructure, Utilities, Surfacing, or Construction sectors
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects and commercial teams
  • Demonstrable experience producing and managing CVRs, forecasts, and cost reporting
  • Strong understanding of procurement processes, subcontract management, and contract administration
  • Excellent knowledge of NEC contracts and construction law
  • Proven track record of improving project margins and commercial performance
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and people management skills
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management abilities
  • Degree, HND, HNC, or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (RICS/CICES) is desirable
  • Full UK Driving Licence
