Role
As an Estimator in Derby, you will be proactive and methodical with experience in civil engineering, fit-out and refurbishment works. The role primarily supports a key client and involves client-facing responsibilities and preparing detailed cost estimates for a wide range of construction projects.
This is an excellent cost estimator opportunity for an ambitious Construction Estimator or Senior Estimator ready to take ownership of pricing across diverse schemes. Our client is looking for an all-rounder who is comfortable pricing projects from minor refurbishments to larger construction works, making this ideal for someone seeking variety and progression.
You'll work closely with project teams, clients and supply chain partners to ensure accurate cost planning and competitive tender submissions across civil, fit-out and refurbishment sectors.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the Estimator in Derby role include:
- Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for civil engineering, fit-out and refurbishment projects including materials, labour and equipment
- Act as the main point of contact for the key client, attending meetings, presenting estimates and addressing queries
- Review project plans, specifications and tender documents to understand requirements and potential challenges
- Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotes and manage the tender process
- Conduct quantity takeoffs and build up rates using estimating software
- Identify risks and opportunities in construction projects and provide recommendations
- Ensure compliance with UK construction methods, regulations and industry standards
- Support and mentor junior estimators, fostering a collaborative team environment
- Help improve estimating processes, tools and methodologies to enhance accuracy and efficiency
- Prepare pre-construction estimates and cost planning reports for client approval
Person
To be successful in this Estimator job in Derby, candidates should ideally have:
- Proven experience as a Construction Estimator, Cost Estimator or Senior Estimator with exposure to civil engineering, fit-out and refurbishment projects - this is essential
- Proficiency in estimating software such as ConQuest, Causeway or Excel and good knowledge of UK construction methods and regulations
- Strong understanding of construction cost planning, quantity takeoff and tender evaluation processes
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or related field (preferred)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present estimates to clients
- Demonstrated leadership and team motivation skills
- Ambitious, methodical and proactive with a solution-focused mindset
- Full UK driving licence for site visits across Derby and the East Midlands
Desirable qualifications:
- Experience with NEC or JCT contracts
- Knowledge of estimating best practice and construction industry standards
- Previous client-facing or bid management experience
