Atkins Search are currently working with a well-respected Mechanical & Electrical Consultancy in Nottingham to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their diverse and professional team.

Client

Our client is an innovative and rapidly expanding M&E (Mechanical and Electrical) Design Consultancy located in Nottingham, who focus on providing high-quality, energy-efficient engineering solutions.

Their expertise spans a diverse range of sectors, including industrial, retail, historic and listed buildings, as well as high-end residential projects - from single-occupancy homes to multi-unit apartment developments.

Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you are responsible for overseeing the design and drawing of mechanical systems within buildings, such as ventilation, air conditioning and fire protection.

You will also analyse problems, perform calculations, supervise work, and carry out end-of-work inspections, ensuring quality, efficiency, and affordability throughout the lifecycle of a project.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical systems across a variety of building projects, ensuring full compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including schematics, layouts, and technical specifications for HVAC, public health (plumbing), and fire protection systems.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external multidisciplinary teams to achieve integrated and coordinated building services solutions.
  • Conduct site inspections and technical reviews to verify installation quality and design compliance.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, providing technical leadership and fostering professional development within the team.
  • Engage in client, contractor, and stakeholder meetings to communicate design intent, resolve technical issues, and ensure project alignment.
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies, sustainable practices, and industry advancements to drive innovation and continuous improvement in design methodologies.

Person

  • Minimum HNC Qualified.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD for mechanical services drawings (essential)
  • Experience with Revit MEP (preferred) — or willingness to develop skills
  • Proven experience delivering detailed mechanical design at Stage 4+
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design engineering within the building services industry.
  • Proficient in industry-standard design software, including AutoCAD, Revit, and other relevant tools.
  • Extensive experience in delivering detailed mechanical designs through RIBA Stage 4 and beyond.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical design principles, building regulations, and applicable industry standards.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a strong eye for detail.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with clients.
